Abstract

A high-efficiency pleated paper filter (12) and activated carbon filters 16 and 18 are arranged in a tubular casing (10), provided with spigots formed by two rings (22, 24) attached to the end faces of the casing and arranged to be received in a passage of circular section such as the inlet or outlet of a fan casing, there being flat annular flexible seals located in the rings serving to make sealing contact with the passge walls. A further filter element of two ply polyurethane foam (32) may be incorporated in one or both rings. <IMAGE>

Description

Combined High-efficiency Fluid Filter and Activated Carbon Filter This invention relates to a combined highefficiency fluid filter and activated carbon filter.
Broadly, the invention is directed to a filter having a casing which contains a hi#h-efficiency fluid filter and a divided-bed activated carbon filter with spigots on the filter casing arranged to be received in receiving means of circular section, there being annular flexible seals on the outer peripheral surfaces of the spigots.
An example of a filter in accordance with the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section through the filter; Figure 2 is an end view of the filter; and, Figure 3 is an enlarged view of part of Figure 1.
The filter shown in the'drawing serves to filter contaminants from an air stream or other gaseous stream. It comprises a rectangular casing 10 made of a synthetic plastics material or metal which contains a high-efficiency filter 12 having a filtering medium of pleated filter paper, and a divided-bed activated carbon filter 14 composed of two planar beds 16 and 18 each formed of off-set layers of cellular material with the cells containing activated carbon particles as shown at 20. Preferably, the axes of the cells in adjacent layers in both the beds 16 and 18 extend in different directions when the planar beds are viewed from one or other of their two sides.
In order to provide a good seal at the peripheries of the two filters 12 and 14, it is preferred that those peripheries be embedded in a resin sealing compound which is moulded on to form the rectangular casing 10 of the filter. The two end faces of the casing 10 have circular apertures cut in them which are bounded or framed by two rings 22 and 24 attached to those faces. As shown in Figure 3, an annular metal key 26 of L-section is spot welded onto each end face of the casing 10, whereupon the respective ring 22 or 24 is moulded onto that key by using a resin material. This ensures a secure connection between each ring and the respective end face of the casing.
An annular groove 28 is formed in the peripheral portion of each ring 22 and 24, and projecting from this groove is an annular disk-like flexible sealing member 30 which serves to make sealing contact with a receiving member of circular section which receives a respective one of the two rings 22 and 24. These receiving members may comprise ducts, the inlet or outlet of a fan casing or some other holding means with which the filter is to be used.
As shown in Figure 1, the ring 22 serves to receive a circular filter element 32 composed of two layers of polyurethane foam material which are bonded face to face with a metal grille 34 serving as a reinforcement between them. Alternatively, or in addition, such a filter element can equally well be mounted in the ring 24.

2. A combined filter according to claim 1, in which the two spigots are formed at the two ends of the casing.
3. A combined filter according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the spigots are formed by rings which are attached to the end faces of the casing.
4. A combined filter according to claim 3, in which an annular metal key is attached by welding to each end face of the casing, the respective ring being moulded out of a resin material on to the key.
5. A combined filter according to claim 3 or any claim appendant thereto, in which one or both of the rings supports within itself a circular filter element additional to the high-efficiency fluid filter and the activated carbon filter.
6. A combined filter according to claim 5, in which the circular filter element supported by the ring or each ring is composed of two layers of synthetic plastics foam material which are bonded face to face with a metal grille serving as a reinforcement between them.
7. A combined filter according to claim 4 or any claim appendant thereto, in which the annular metal key is of Lsection so as to provide a secure connection between the ring and the respective end face of the casing.
8. A combined filter substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
