Open fireplaces; feeding; grates; lighting fires. -A self-contained open fireplace for consuming anthracite, coke, and like fuels, and operating on the down-draught system, comprises inclined firebars l extending from back to front and resting at their upper ends on a crossbar k, the lower surface of which forms an extension of the plane of the lower surface of the bars to the uptake fluel g. The gases pass through the grate to the flue g without the need of descending below the horizontal line, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3. The effective grate area is controlled by a plate n sliding beneath the upper end and operated through connecting-rods o and cranks p by an external handle attached to the spindle q. The back-plate e of the stove fits into the ordinary fireplace recess and extends up to a point above the bottom of the canopy; between it and the back wall f is formed the uptake flue g. The radiant surface of the fuel is largely in front of the fireplace recess and the canopy opening above it. The grate is provided with a removable plate x forming a hopper in which the fuel may be dried. By means of a rod w the grate may be reciprocated laterally to clear it of ashes. The front b of the grate is provided with a double. row of perforations u, between which and on the inner face may be arranged a tubular gas-burner with downwardly-inclined jets for igniting the fuel.
