Abstract
A high insulation survival blanket, capable of being inflated through an inflator and valve (5) to contain gas (usually exhaled air) comprises two layers of metallised plastic film (1) welded together along seams (2). Internal pockets (3) provide strength and rigidity. Outside the weld are reinforced holes 9. The blanket may also function as a splint. <IMAGE>
Description
HIGH INSULTATION SURVIVAL BLANKET
This invention relates to a high insulation survival blanket.
Survival blankets are useful and well used items in both the professional and leisure fields for use in preventing loss of body heat from a patient in danger of hypothermia or shock. They usually consist of a sheet of metallised polyester film, which is wrapped around the patient's body, but they are poor insulators against loss through conductive heat, a far greater source of body heat loss. Also because of their thin film construction they are not very robust or easy to handle, leading to easy tearing and lack of efficacy.
According to the present invention, the blanket is made more robust by using polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride (1) and constructing the blanket in a double layer, sealed around the outside edge by an airtight weld or seal (2), except for an opening in which gas (usually exhaled air) can be introduced so as to inflate the blanket. Also within its construction are pockets (3) to add strength and rigidity to the invention and a simple valve (4).
The outside of the blanket can be coated with a design that signifies its use, i.e. in an emergency an internationally acceptable distress sign, a commercial design or logo or acceptable and appropriate military camouflage or other markings.
In addition there are provided reinforced holes (9) outside the air weld or seal that can be threaded with string or other bindings to produce a more three dimensional shape that will provide shelter and be more visible when viewed along the horizon, i.e. at sea. The internal pockets also serve to form braces in order that the blanket, when partially inflated, will provide a splint-like structure to support broken limbs and damaged backs.
The blanket, when supplied and/or not in use, will be folded so as to be convenient and unobtrusive for its particular use and will be contained as appropriate.
The simple valve and inflator, when the blanket is sufficiently inflated, can be made airtight by tying a simple knot in the tube.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which .............
(1) Two layers of metallised film (MPF) typically l.Sm x
3m in dimension.
(2) An airtight weld or seal around the whole blanket.
(3) Internal pockets constructed by welding or sealing to
a design similar to that in the drawing, or to specific
designs for specific purposes.
(4) Inflation tube through which the whole blanket can be
inflated to the required size.
(5) A simple valve, details contained in (6).
(7) Two pieces of MPF inside the valve formed into a tube,
which will have a higher pressure of air/gas outside
it than inside it (except when air/gas is being
introduced) thus causing the unwelded part to close,
preventing air/gas inside the blanket from escaping.
(8) Airtight weld/seal attaching valve to the inflator and
forming a tube for part of its length.
(9) Holes or openings of various designs according to
specific purposes of the blanket, set outside the
airtight weld/seal (2).
Claims (1)
- (1) A high insulating survival blanket consisting of two layers of metallised plastic film, bound by an airtight weld/seal, containing within further weld/seals to form pockets, and being able to be inflated through an inflator valve.(2) A simple valve or device to prevent or impede the inflator gases to escape.(3) A series of reinforced holes or other openings in the blanket, outside the airtight weld/seals.(4) A blanket as claimed in claim (1) with a design to denote its use, e..g. internationally acceptable distress symbol, camouflage or commercial design or logo.
