Abstract
227,234. Walter, E. W. Nov. 1, 1923. Machines supported by rotary propellers; propelling; planes, construction of; steering.-The lifting mechanism of a flying machine comprises two longitudinal parallel shafts rotating in opposite directions and carrying wings adapted to be distended when descending and folded when ascending. As shown each shaft. 2 carries three sets of four wings, opposite wings in each set being coupled together so that when one is extended the other is folded. Each wing comprises fabric 11 stretched on ribs 9. 9<a>, hinged on a hub 3, Fig. 4, fixed to the shaft 2, in such a manner that they can be folded to lie parallel to the shaft. Supporting struts 10 and stay wires 13 give lateral rigidity. The wings are folded and distended by means of fixed cams 16 engaged by arms projecting from the ribs 9. The aircraft is propelled by a screw 27a carried by the shaft of a motor 29, which is mounted so that it can be turned to steer the aircraft. In a modification, each wing comprises a number of overlapping leaves 34, Fig. 15, of metal or other rigid material, pivoted at one end and at the other connected by links 36, 39.
