Abstract

Propelling, steering, and manoeuvring by paddle-wheels.-Feathering paddle-wheels of the kind in which the paddles are pivoted on axes parallel to the shaft are feathered by rods operated from an eccentric of adjustable phase whereby the normals to the paddles intersect at a single point of adjustable position, and consists in providing a curved guide for the control rods having a variable eccentricity. As applied to the raising and propulsion of an aircraft 1, the wheels are mounted on a shaft 19 supported in bearings 23 on a framework 2. Each wheel A comprises a star frame 4 secured to the shaft by a flange 31 and set screw 38 and a second similar frame, at the outer ends 7 of which the paddles 6 are pivotally mounted. Each blade has pivotally secured to it at 9 a link 8, the inner end of which is linked at 10 to the main star frame and is also provided with a crosspiece 15a having two rollers 15. The rollers engage cam members 13 carried by a ring 14 mounted on an eccentric 17 which is in turn mounted on an eccentric 18, a sleeve 24 on which is freely supported on the main bearing 23. The sleeve 24 has opposed lugs 41 which are coupled bv cables 41<a>, 41<b> to a control lever 41d, whilst the eccentric 17 has secured thereto a lever 40 from which cables 40<a>, 40b pass to a control lever 40d. When the engine is driving the shaft 19 the paddles are feathered as a result of the eccentric motion of the ring 14. For altering the phase the lever 40d is used to adjust the eccentric 17, and for altering the eccentricity the lever 41d is used to adjust the eccentric 18. In a modification, the eccentric 17 is secured to a ring with two slots at right-angles so arranged that either the phase or eccentricity or both controls can be effected.
