Abstract
226,729. Howe, R. J. May 15, 1924. Screwdrivers. - A screwdriver provided with means for holding a screw or other part during insertion, comprises gripping points 18 carried by spring legs 17 formed in one with a sleeve 15 surrounding the stem 10 of the screwdriver. Limited movement between the stem and the sleeve is permitted by a slot 13 in the stem engaged by a tongue 14 on the sleeve. Closure of the points 18 to grip the screw &c. is effected by longitudinal movement of a sleeve 21 surrounding the sleeve 15 and the legs 17. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a tongue 28 formed on the sleeve 15 is adapted to protrude into a slot 22 in the sleeve 21 and, on rotation of the sleeve, to engage one of a. series of locking notches 27. In operation, the stem of the screw &c. is placed between the gripping points 18, the sleeve 21 lowered to lock the points 18 and the tongue 28 is engaged with one of the notches 27. The stem 10 is then depressed to cause its end 12 to engage the screw, this movement being allowed by the slot 13. In a modification, the slot 22 and the tongue 28 are dispensed with and protuberances 35, Fig. 9, are formed in the sleeve 21 to engage between the. legs 17. On depression of the sleeve 21, the tongue 14 is carried to the lower end of the slot 13 by the engagement of the sleeve with the legs 17, and when the sleeve 21 is raised, the engagement of the parts 35 imparts a similar movement to the sleeve 15.
