Abstract

A device for killing insects and other pests comprises a casing (1) made of electrically insulating material and having an electrical conductor 2 at one end, a spark generator (3) mounted in the casing and connected by leads (8) to the conductor, and a transformer (4) connected between the generator (3) and a socket (6) which is adapted to be connected to a voltage supply. The electrical conductor may take the form of a strip (2) or a roller. When connected to a voltage supply, the spark generator (3) is effective to cause the electrical conductor to direct electric sparks at an area to which the device has been applied in order to kill any infestation of insects in said area. <IMAGE>

Description

Title: DEVICE FOR WILLING INSECTS AND OTHER PESTS This invention relates to devices for killing insects and other pests.
It is known to kill insects and other pests by means of toxic chemicals but such chemicals can have an adverse effect on the environment and can also kill predators, for example, birds which feed on infected insects.
The present invention aims to provide a device for killing insects and other noxIous pests which is totally environmentally friendly and is free from the use of toxic chemicals and their side effects.
According to the invention, there is provided a device for killing insects and other pests which comprises a casing made of electrically insulating material and provided with an electrical conductor at one end, a spark generator mounted in the casing and connected to the conductor, and means for connecting the spark generator to a voltage supply whereby, when thus connected, the spark generator is effective to cause the conductor to direct electric sparks at an area to which the device has been applied in order to kill any infestation of insects or other life forms in said area.
The electrical conductor may take the form of a strip of electrically conductive material which is arranged to close an otherwise open end of the casing.
Alternatively, the electrical conductor may take the form of a roller of electrically conductive material which is rotatably mounted on the casing at an open end thereof and which serves to close the otherwise open end of the casing.
The casing may be made of any suitable electrically insulating material, such as wood or plastics, although a plastics material such as "Bakelite" (Registered Trade Mark) is preferred.
The spark generator desirably takes the form of a transistorised spark generating system and may be supplied with voltage either from batteries, which may be contained within the casing, or from the mains supply via a suitable transformer which could also be contained within the casing.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through one embodiment of a device according to the invention; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section through a second embodiment of a device according to the invention.
In the drawings, like parts are denoted by like reference numerals.
Reference will first be made to Fig. 1 cf the drawings in whIch the device comprises a casing 1 made of G suitable electrically insulating material as above described. The casing has an open lower end which Is closable by a strip 2 of electrically conducting material.Mounted within the casing are a spark generator 3 in the form of a transistorised spark generating system and a transformer . The trans-more is suitably a mains transformer having a voltage range from 5-60,000 volts and an electrical lead 5 leads from the transformer to a socket 6 in ne wall of the casing 1 by means of which the transformer can be connected to the electric mains supply or to an alternative voltage supply such as a generator or battery not shown) . The transformer 4 is connected by leads 7 to the spark generator 3 in order to supply the generator with a variable voltage supply and the generator in turn is connected by H.T. leads 8 to the conductive strip 2. A switch (not shown) may also be provided on the side of the casing to control the operation of the spark generator.
In use, the device is connected to a voltage supply and switched on. The casing 1 is then held with the conductive strip 2 held against an area which it is desired to clear of insect or other pest infestation such as, for example, carpets or underlay, soft furnishIngs such as drapes or curtains, upholstered furniture, cushions, bedding, mattresses, pillows and the life. The sparks generated by the device will be ereotive to ili all insect life in such areas.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the conductive strip is replaced by a roller 9 which is rotatably mounted in the open end of the casing 1. This embodiment is otherwise similar in every respect to the embodiment illustrated in Hig. 1 of the drawings.
Either the strip 2 or roller 9 is preferably made of conductive P.V.C.
The device according to the invention can be made in any sultabe size. In one fcrm, for example, which is designed to be hand held, the voltage supply may he obtained from batteries contained within the casing to provide a truly portable device. In another form, it is envisaged to incorporate the device in a domestic vacuum cleaner in which rase the voltage supply will normally combe from the domestic mains.
The invention is not restricted to the above-described embodiments, nor to the uses above described, but is capable of wider application. The device according to the invention can be used, for example, on woodwork to kill wocdworm botch in furniture and in the timbers o- buildings. The device can also be used to destroy the nests of ants, wasps, silver fish, cockroaches, mosquitos, locusts etc. and could be used by Local Authorities. The device also has the potential to kill rats and mice.
The device according to the invention can also be used in horti culture for example in the sterilisation d purging of soil containing fungi, mites and the like.
It will thus be seen that the device according to the invention has utility in various forms cf pest control depending on the potential of spark generation. Its value in controlling house mites, bed mites, fleas and the like cannot be over-emphasised, certainly for the benefit o people suffering from asthma and other respiratory problems.
The device according to the invention completely avoids the use of toxic chemicals and their side effects and 5 means of transistors can generate and control a spark of low voltage to very high voltage in order to exterminate not only insect life but also rodents which can be found in domestic and industrial buildings.
