Description
SPECIFICATION
Etching glass
The present invention relates to etching glass.
According to the present invention from one aspect, there is provided a method of etching glass, which method comprises the steps of:
a) applying to a surface of the glass a strip of tape having an opening through which is revealed a part of the said surface;
b) applying hydroflouric acid resistant characters onto the said part of the surface of the glass;
c) applying hydroflouric acid through said opening on to the said part of the surface of the glass so that the said part of the surface of the glass is etched around the said characters; and
d) removing the said strip of tape and the characters from the said surface.
According to the present invention from another aspect, there is provided a kit of parts for use in etching glass by a method according to the preceding paragraph, comprising a strip of tape having an opening, for application to a surface of glass to reveal a part of the said surface through the said opening; a set of hydroflouric acid resistant characters for application on to such a part of a surface of glass; and hydroflouric acid providing means.
Preferably, the hydroflouric acid providing means comprises a strip carrying a substance which releases hydroflouric acid if it is exposed to water, this strip being applied over the characters after the latterhave been applied on to such a part of a surface of glass. Such a strip may be applied already wetted. Preferably, the kit of parts further includes a container for water for use in wetting such a strip, there being dissolved in the water a substance for increasing its wetting properties, such as ethyl alcohol or iso-propyl alcohol.
Preferably, the kit of parts includes a roller for use in rolling the wetted strip after the latter has been applied over the characters.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a strip of tape applied to a glass surface;
Figure 2 shows hydroflouric acid resistant characters applied on to a part of the glass surface revealed by an opening in the strip of tape;
Figure 3 shows a strip which carries a substance which releases hydroflouric acid if the strip is wetted; and
Figure 4 shows the result of etching the glass surface.
The following example of the invention provides, by way of example, for the production by etching of the registration number of a vehicle on at least one glass surface of the vehicle, such as the windscreen and/or at least one of its windows for security purposes.
Referring first to Figure 1, a strip of adhesive tape 1, such as electrical insulating tape, is stuck on to the glass surface 2 after cleaning the latter, the strip of tape having an opening 3 through which is revealed a part of the glass surface. By way of example, the opening 3 is about 4 cm bv 1 cm. The vehicle registration number is then applied on to the part of the glass surface revealed by the opening 3 using a set of dry transfer characters such as Letraset (Trade Mark) characters -- see Figure 2. A strip 4 (Figure 3) about 4 cm by 1 cm and carrying a substance which releases hydrofluoric acid if the strip is wetted is immersed in a solution which comprises, for example, about 25% by volume of ethyl alcohol or iso-propyl alcohol in water.Instead of either of these substances to increase the wetting properties of the water, other substances could be used. Such a strip 4 is manufactured by Etching
Transfer Co. Ltd., P.O. Box 27, Worthing, Sussex.
The wetted strip 4 is then placed over the opening 3 and rolled using a roller, thereafter being left for about three minutes. The hydroflouric acid released etches the part of the glass surface revealed through the opening 3 around the Letraset characters, the edge of the strip of tape 1 around the opening providing a sharp limit to the extent of the etching. The strip 4 is then removed, the strip of tape is pulled away and the dry transfer characters washed off, the result being shown in Figure 4 in which reference numeral 5 denotes the etched area of the glass surface 2 around areas which are un-etched as a result of the dry transfer characters and which denote the registration number of the vehicle.
For carrying out the above, a kit of parts comprises a plurality of strips of tape 1 having openings 3; a set dry transfer characters; a plurality of strips 4; a container containing a solution of about 25% by volume of iso-propyl alcohol or ethyl alcohol in water; and a roller.
1. A method of etching glass, which method comprises the steps of:
a) applying to a surface of the glass a strip of tape having an opening through which is revealed a part of the said surface;
b) applying hydroflouric acid resistant characters on to the said part of the surface of the glass;
c) applying hydroflouric acid through said opening on to the said part of the surface of the glass so that the said part of the surface of the glass is etched around the said characters; and
d) removing the said strip of tape and the characters from the said surface.
2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the hydroflouric acid is applied using hydroflouric-acid providing means which comprises a strip carrying a substance which releases hydroflouric acid if it is exposed to water, this strip being applied over the characters after the latter have been applied on to the said part of the surface of the glass.
3. A method according to claim 2, wherein the strip is applied already wetted.
4. A method according to claim 2, wherein the
