211,182. Polouectoff, J. P., Bokchanovsky, E. E., and Verderevsky, D. N. Oct. 12, 1922. Hatches.-A hatch designed for use in conjunction with systems for preventing ships from sinking in which the holds are filled with compressed air, is constructed' of riveted steel sheets reinforced by ribs and is provided at its edges with rollers 7, 8 working on guide rails 9. When the hatchway is to be closed, the hatch is slid along its guides 9 into position and is then raised until packing strips 3 with loose edges are brought into engagement with the flat part 5 of the coaming whereupon the excess air pressure in the hold maintained by pumps effects a final air-tight closure. The gear for raising the hatch comprises the screw 15 working in the beam 13 and turned by a hand wheel. Each screw carries at its extremity a cable having a hook 17 which is engaged with a ring 11 pivoted to the hatch cover. An air lock 18 is fitted to the underside of the hatch.
