Description
"HOSE END SLEEVE"
This invention relates to end fittings for hoses for pressurised fluid systems.
Pressure hoses are widely used in hydraulic and pneumatic system and end fittings which satisfactorily resist the fluid pressures involved (e.g. 18,000 p.s.i. or more) have been known and used for many years. Such fittings normally involve an inner member which includes a nipple extending into the hose and an outer sleeve which is swaged over the hose end to trap the hose end on the nipple.
However, as the sleeve has formations on its inner surface to bite into the hose and iS normally machined from rod stock, it is a relatively expensive item.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an end fitting having a sleeve which is inexpensive to manufacture yet remains technically satsifactory.
The present invention is a sleeve for an end fitting on a pressure hose and comprising a tubular shell member having at one end an internal flange, and at least two inner tubular members each engaging the inner surface of the shell member and having an internal flange, one of said inner members having its flange parallel to the flange of the shell member and in engagement therewith.
The present invention is also an end fitting on a pressure hose comprising a first member having a nipple extending into the hose and having a peripheral groove outside the hose, and a sleeve as defined in the last preceding paragraph, the sleeve having been swaged such that the flanges of the shell member and the one of the inner members are engaged with the peripheral groove and the flanges of the other inner members are embedded in the wall of the hose.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a partial longitudinal section of a fitting assembled on the end of a pressure hose; and
Fig. 2 is partial longitudinal section of the fitting of Fig.-1 after the outer shell has been swaged to engage the wall of the hose.
Referring now to Fig. 1, an end fitting comprises a sleeve 10 surrounding the end of pressure hose 11 in which is located the nipple 12 of an inner coupling member 13. The nipple 12 is a tight fit in the end of the hose and is provided with a number of peripheral ridges 15 and a land 16 which engages the end surface of the hose. Outside the hose a peripheral groove 18 is formed in the surface of the member 13, and beyond that, i.e. to the left as seen in the drawings, is provided any of the well known coupling arrangements whereby a pressure-tight joint may be effected between the end fitting illustrated and a matching end fitting. As the coupling arrangement is irrelevant to the present invention, details of it are not illustrated.
The pressure hose 11 comprises a thick rubber wall 20 in which is embedded a reinforcing layer 21 of steel mesh.
The sleeve 10, which is located on the end of the hose prior to insertion of the nipple 12, comprises an outer shell member 24 which is tubular and has at one end an internal flange 26. Located within the shell member 24 are a number of tubular inner members (in this embodiment five) each having an outer surface which-engages the inner surface of the shell 24 and an internal flange. One inner member 28 has its flange 30 parallel to and in contact with the flange 26 of the shell member but the flanges 32 of the other inner members 34 are all parallel and inwardly inclined towards the end of the hose.
It will be seen from Fig. 1 that the flanges 26 and 30 are located around the peripheral groove 18 in the member 13 and that the flanges 32 are axially staggered with respect to the ridges 15 on the nipple.
From the position shown in Fig. 1 the sleeve 10 is compressed by swaging to the position shown in Fig. 2 in which the flanges 26 and 30 are engaged in the groove 18 while the flanges 32 have become embedded in the wall of the hose. The end fitting as shown in Fig. 2 is fully capable of withstanding the pressures for which the hose is designed.
In this embodiment the shell 24 and the inner members 28 are all pressed from sheet steel.
The function of the inner member 28 is essentially to reinforce the flange end of the shell member so that its flange is necessarily parallel to the flange of the shell member, but the flanges 32 of the other inner members 34 can be at any desired angle to the hose axis and can be inclined inwardly towards or away from the end of the hose.
