Abstract

A generally cylindrical canister 10 has a side wall 12 and top 14 and bottom 16 walls sealed thereto. The seals between the side wall 12 and the top and bottom walls 14, 16 respectively form upstanding lips 18 and 20 respectively. About the side wall 12 is a layer 22 of monoaxially orientated rigid polyvinyl chloride that has been heat shrunk to fit the canister closely. The layer of polyvinyl chloride used was sized slightly longer then the canister itself so that on heat shrinking the top and bottom edges of the polyvinyl chloride layer turned over the lips 18 and 20 at 24 and 26 respectively. The inner surface of the layer may be provided with a pressure-sensitive adhesive coating. <IMAGE>

Description

Title: Labels for canisters DESCRIPTION This invention concerns labels for canisters.
Canisters made from metal sheet are commonly used for containing a variety of materials, such as foodstuffs, paints etc. The outer surface of the canisters may be screen printed directly onto the surface or plastic sleeves or paper labels are used to convey details of contents. Such canisters may be susceptible -to damage, such as due to impact or corrosion and identification details may be lost. A protective coating or cover is, therefore, desirable.
The object of this invention is to provide a protective label for a canister and to improve its visual appearance.
According to the invention a label for a canister comprises a layer of preferably- filmic heat shrinkable plastics material preferably at least around the side of the canister and retained by, preferably pressure sensitive, adhesive.
The plastics material is heat shrinkable to facilitate wrapping around the edges of the canister, e.g. by heating.
A plastics material suitable for this purpose is monoaxially orientated rigid polyvinyl chloride but other plastics materials, such as polypropylene, may be used.
The plastics material may be in the form of a single layer or may be a laminate of two or more layers of plastics material possibly even with one or more layers of different material in between. Such other material may be a metal film or foil.
For securing the labels of the invention to a canister the inner surface of the plastics layer may have an adhesive coating thereon, preferably of a pressure sensitive type.
The plastics layer may be transparent or opaque and may have printing thereon. The plastics layer may have a primer coating, applied to its intended outer surface to render it more receptive to printing or it could be treated say by corona discharge to the same effect.
In wrapping a canister with a label of the invention, the label material will usually be cut slightly longer than the canister so that when heated the ends of the label material turn over the top and bottom edges of the canister upon shrinking.
The plastics layer can have advantages in being resilient and so less susceptible to damage, such as splitting, for example if dropped and in being receptive to printing techniques for application of trade names constituents and other relevant data.
The invention will now further be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a canister in section.
Referring to the drawing, a generally cylindrical canister 10 has a side wall 12 and top 14 and bottom 16 walls sealed thereto.
The layer of polyvinyl chloride used was sized slightly longer than the canister itself so that on heat shrinking the top and bottom edges of the polyvinyl chloride layer turned over the lips 18 and 20 at 24 and 26 respectively.
