Abstract

1453540 Labelling containers; cans AMERICAN CAN CO 17 July 1974 31618/74 Heading B8F and B8D A method of labelling a can body 10 having at least one necked-in end portion 12, 24 comprises applying a thermocontractive, thermoplastic label 22 to the can body and shrinking the label overlying the portion 12, 24 to form a bonded contact with the necked-in end portion. The can body may be a two-piece can, Figure 1, or a three-piece, side-seamed can, Figure 4. The label comprises a composite film of a thermocontractive, thermoplastic polymeric base layer and a heat-activated polymeric adhesive on at least one of its surfaces. The base layer may be a polyamide, polyolefin or alternating layers of each, and the adhesive may be an acidic ethylenic polymer. The can body is preheated to a temperature of from 185‹ to 350‹ F. and the can body is encircled with the label, which has been heated to activate the adhesive, with a leading edge of the label contacting the body along a line parallel to the longitudinal axis of the can. Bonding of the label takes place on the can body except at the necked in portions. The remainder of the label is bonded to the portions by application of the necessary heat to contact the label at the region of the portions. When the can has a side seam 26 the leading and trailing edges 23 of the label are arranged to overlie the side seam. The labels may be produced by coextending melts of respective polymers through a common die, withdrawing the resultant melt and uniaxially orienting the coextruded film. The film can then be heat set to provide a predetermined degree of shrinkability.
