To permit an easier assembly, it is provided that the reinforcing and retaining element (8, 10), on one side, comprises a section (26, 44, 52) radially inwardly projecting beyond the base section. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Protective sleeve for cylindrical components This invention relates to a protective sleeve for cylindrical components, for example for a spot-type disc brake, comprising an elastic (pleated) bellows one end section of which is adapted to be secured at the periphery of a first cylindrical component and the other end section of which is adapted to be secured at the periphery of a second cylindrical component, and comprising a rigid reinforcing and retaining element provided on at least one of the said end sections.
A protective sleeve ofthis type is already known from West German Specification DE-OS 3418806.
However, the prior art protective sleeve is likely to present problems in connection with the assembly to the extent that, when joining the two components, such as a brake carrier and a brake housing of a spot-type disc brake, the sleeve does not automatically find its proper position to force down the retaining elements. It is then eccentricaliy mounted on the respective component.
It is, therefore, an object of the invention to improve a protective sleeve as mentioned above to the effect that assembly thereof is rendered easier.
According to the present invention there is provided a protective sleeve for cylindrical components comprising an elastic (pleated) bellows one end section of which is adapted to be secured at the peripheryofa first cylindrical componentandthe other end section of which is adapted to be secured at the periphery of a second cylindrical component, and comprising a rigid reinforcing and retaining element provided on at least one ofthe said end sections, characterised in that the or each reinforcing and retaining element, on one side, comprises a section projecting radially inwardly beyond the radially inward delimitation ofthe end section.
For providing the inwardly projecting section, one ofthe wall sections maybe bent with the bent section directed radially inwardly.
Alternatively, the radially inwardly projecting section can be formed to adjoin an axially extending section. Another possibility is that the radially inwardly projecting section, advantageously, can be contiguous a substantially axially extending section, thereby providing a safety distance between oppositely disposed components and precluding parts of the flexible bellows from being clamped.
Astill frirther possibility is that the radially inwardly projecting section is formed by bending off a part disposed adjacentthe base section which, after a U-shaped bending, merges into the wall section.
Embodiments ofthe invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section through a first embodiment of protective sleeve in the mounted condition on a pin guidance of a disc brake; Figure2 is an enlarged view in section ofthe reinforcing and retaining element, respectively, according to Figure 1, showing only the upper half; Figure 3 shows another embodiment of a protective sleeve in longitudinal section, with only the upper half shown; Figure4is a longitudinal section through one form of reinforcing and retaining element;; Figure 5shows a longitudinal section through anotherform of reinforcing and retaining element, and Figure 6shows a longitudinal section through a third form of reinforcing and retaining element.
With reference to the drawings, Figure 1 shows a pin guidance for a spot-type disc brake, with a guide pin 62 secured to a brake carrier portion 60, the free end of which pin protrudes into a guide bore 64 of a brake housing 66 to dispose the brake housing on the brake carrier in an axially displaceable manner.
Formed on brake carrier 60 and on brake housing 66, at the front (facing) sides thereof, are cylindrically configured recesses 68,70 as well as adjoining and circumferential axial projections 72,74. Disposed on projections 72,74 and - partly - in recesses 68,70, respectively, are reinforcing and retaining elements 76,78, respectively, holding, in a partly straddling manner, end portions 80,72 of pleated bellows 84.
One ofthe reinforcing and retaining elements is shown, on an enlarged scale, in Figure 2which illustrates onlythe upper halfthereof. The reinforcing and retaining element 76 comprises a base section 86 followed, on one side, by a wall section 88 extending at an angle of approximately 45 and, on the other side, by a wall section 90 extending at an angle of about 90 . The wall section 90 radially extends beyond the end part 80,82, in particular, for example, into the area ofthe radial delimitation (extent) of the cylindrical components.
The wall section 90, externally, is bent by about 180 so that the second wall section 92 is formed to extend substantially in parallel to the wall section 90.
The wall section 92, atthe level of the base section 86, merges into an axially extending section 94 which, in turn, terminates in a section 96 extending substantially radially (inwardly). The axial length X1 and X2, respectively, of the sections 94 ofthe reinforcing and retaining elements 76, 78-single or combined - is so selected that sufficient space will always remain between the wall sections so that the bellows cannot be clamped or damaged. As clearly shown by Figure 1, the wall sections 96 extend to closely approach the guide pin 62 such that the reinforcing elements 76,78, during assembly, attain a guidance.
The protective sleeve as shown in Figure 3, comprises two end sections 4,6 provided with reinforcing or retaining elements 8,10. The reinforcing or retaining elements 8,10, in cross-section, substantially are of U-shaped configuration and each comprise first and second wall sections 12,14 and 16,18, respectively, that are interconnected via a base section 20,22. The internally disposed wall sections 14, 18 are inclined toward the end sections 4, 6therebysafely straddling the said wall sections. The internally disposed wall sections 14,8 radially extend outwardly to a slightlyfurther degree than the opposite external wall sections 12, 16. In the radially outer region, the wall sections 18, 14 are bent so that theyform a further section 24,26 which, afterthe U-shaped bending, extends substantially perpendicularto the longitudinal axis, at the same time protruding radially inwardly beyond the base section 20,22. The inside diameter of the protruding sections 24,26, in particular, only slightly exceeds the diameter of the cylindrical components, for example, of the supporting pin on wich it is seated.
The base sections 20,22 comprise partial areas ofthe elements 8,10which are spaced at the same radius, that is atthe same distance from the axis of a cylindrical component, corresponding to guide pin 62 of Figure 1. This permits during assemblythat by way of axial displacement of one element, the other element is shifted into its position on the cylindrical component. This is accomplished in that during such axial displacementthetwo elements due to being positioned at the same distance from the axis will move into abutment on one another. The entire protective sleeve is thereby precentred, and the reinforcing and retaining elements during joining together of carrier and housing, automatically find their appertaining positions. The additional space requirementforthe extended sections is extremely low and approximately only corresponds to the twofold sheet metal thickness, e.g. twice 0.35 mm.
Figure4showsanotherform of embodiment of a reinforcing and retaining element 30 which, also comprises a substantially U-shaped cross-section which, however, in that instance, is of a slightly more open configuration in that the wall section 32 relative to the base section 34 extends at an obtuse angle which is in the range ofbetween 120 and 170'and, preferably, is between 145 and 160O.
The reinforcing and retaining element40 of Figure 5, as regards substantial parts thereof, corresponds to element 30 as illustrated in Figure 4. As opposed thereto, the radially external part 42 of the inwardly projecting section 44 extends in parallel to the wall section 46 resulting in a sharper bend atthe change-over between parts 46 and 42.
In the reinforcing and retaining element 50 as shown in Figure 6, the inwardly protruding section 52 is formed to emerge from base section 54 and is configured as a U-shaped bend having parallel sections 56,58. Emerging from section 58, another section 60 extends to form the inner walk section of the reinforcing and retaining element 50, the end section 62 ofwhich is bent at approximately right angles to section 60.
