Abstract

A display card 100 for displaying solid cosmetic samples for sampling by the customer is described. A composition of solid cosmetic such as eyeshadow is mixed with volatile silicone to form a slurry. Samples 120-130 of the slurry are then applied to the display card by spraying or dropping onto the display card. The samples are then allowed to dry. Following this a protective coating such as waxed paper 170 is applied over the samples. The result is a display card with samples of a solid cosmetic. The potential customer can then remove the protective coating gaining access to the sample for applying a portion of a sample to the customer's skin. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATiON Apparatus and method for display and sampling of solid cosmetics The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for displaying and sampling solid cosmetics, for example, eye shadow or lipstick, in magazines and stores.
Eye shadows and lipsticks are available in an ever increasing variety of colors, textures, sheens etc.
which are designed to meet a wide range of consumer tastes and accompany changing fashions. All ofthis creates a need on both the part of the vendor and the userfor a display which is flexible enough to demonstrate the variety of solid cosmetics available and provide a means for potential user to sample it personally to see if it produces the desired or desirable effect.
Today, one way vendors displaytheirvariety of solid cosmetics is to use a display poster on which a number of different colors of lipstick or eyeshadow is presented. The display poster when used in the store is usually of heavy duty construction to withstand a great deal of customer handling, or it may appear as a page in a magazine.
Due to the wide range of colors, textures and sheens, however, thistype of display does notfulfill the needs of todays customers who wish to seewhat effect the productwill haveforthem when applied, a need which can only be fulfilled by applying the product.
An object ofthe present invention isto provide a display of a variety of solid cosmetic products, such as a display of different colors of eyeshadows or lipsticks, which display can also serve as a meansforthe consumer to test the product by application of sample.
A predetermined quantity ofthe solid cosmetic to be displayed and sampled is attached to a displaysheet which may be adapted for an insertion in a magazine or as a disply cardforuse on a store cosmetic counter.
The solid cosmetic is first added to a volatile liquid, such as volatile silicone, to form a slurry, and then dropped or sprayed onto the display sheet. It is dried and then a removable protective film is applied over the sample.
In the prefered embodiment, a plurality of different colorsamples are applied to a single display card, and a Iayerofwaxed paper is adapted for overlaying the cosmetic samples.
The Figure is a representation of a preferred embodiment of the present invention display card with a protective sheet attached thereto along one side and shown open to provide access to the cosmetic samples.
Referring to the Figure, a display card designated generally 100 is shown comprising a magazine grade single sheet paper 102 approximately 11 inches long on sides 104 and 106 and 81/2 inches wide along sides 108 and 1 At leastonesurface 1 l2efthesheetsheet high gloss appearance and it is lightly colored. In the preferred embodimentthe color is white.
The displaycardi0Ocontains promotional informa- tion in region 116 along thetop side 108. The promotional information identifies the solid cosmetic productcontainedonthecard andthesupplier thereof.
An array of uniformly shaped samples even numbers 120-130 of a solid cosmetic are attached to the surface 112 in region 160 of the display card. The solid cosmetic samples may be a singletype of cosmetic or number of different cosmetics such aseyeshadow and/or lipstick. In the preferred embodiment, all of the samples on a display card will be of one type, for example, eyeshadow and will differ from one another in color.
The display card 100 further comprises a sheet of waxed paper 170 attached to side 104 of sheet 102.
The waxed papersheet is adapted to overlay the cosmetic samples when pressedtogethertherewith and to be separable therefrom as shown in the Figure, to allow access thereto by a customer.
When it is desired to sample the solid cosmetic, the waxed paper is pulled from the display sheet and one ofthe samples 120-130 is selected for application by simply wiping the sample with a finger or other applicator to remove some solid cosmetic from the sample patch. The portion removed is then applied to the customer. When the customer is through with the display card, the customer places the protective waxed paper 170 back overthe display sheet 102.
Where the display card is designed for use in a store cosmeticcounter a heavy duty cardboard sheet with a lightly colored, glossy surface may be used in place of the magazine sheet.
While there is no requirementfora unique composition forthe solid cosmetic to be used with the present invention display card, a representative example of an eyeshadowsuitablefor display with a display sheet 100 is provided below. It comprises three phases: Phase A, the main ca rrier of the eyeshadow i ncluding the pigment and making up 31 to 33% by weight; Phase B, consisting of pearls and making up 55 to 57% by weight; Phase C, a binder intermediate making up 12% by weight.
Phase A includes the ingredients in TableAwith a percentage by weight listed therein.
TABLE A Talc 0.85 Ca stearate 2.00-3.00 PGM No.5 (Mica) 10.00 Lo M icron Mica 10.00 Kaolin 3.00-4.00 Teg M 0.10 Bromat 0.10 Biron Fines 2.00 Black3068 0.80 Pigments Umber1985R 1.60 Russet C33-5138 0.55 Phase B includes the pearls listed in Table Bwith percentage of each providedtherein.
TABLE B Cloisonne Copper 19.00 Na Antique Copper 21.00 Golden Bronze 4.00 Timica Copper 2.00 Red 100 4.00 PG M-5 7.00 The composition of Phase C is given in Table C.
TABLE C Acetylated Lanolin Alcohol 64.75 Arlacel 83 Sorbitan Sesquinoleate 5.00 Vitamen Etocopherol 0.25 Volatile Silicone 30.00 Table C shows the percentage of each component which makes up the intermediate binder. The total comes to 100%.The intermediate binder represents twelve per cent of the overall eyeshadow composi- tion.
The ingredients of Phase A are mixed together until uniform, andthentheyare passedthrough a 0.013 inch screen two times in succession to insure that there are no partical sizes biggerthan the screen size.
Phase B isthen added to PhaseAand mixed for about 30 minutes. Phase C is sprayed into the mixture of Phases A and B afterthe 30 minutes and the total composition is passed through a micropulverizer without screen depending on shade.
The above procedure results in a dry eyeshadow which is the same asthatwhich is to be displayed. In orderto apply this dry eyeshadowto the display sheet, the dry eyeshadow is added to volatile silicone, about 70% dry eyeshadow by weight and 30% volatile silicone,to form a slurry. The slurry is then dropped or sprayed onto the display cardto form the samples. In the preferred embodiment display card, anywhere from fourto twelve different colored samples may be used, each sample covering about one square inch in area and comprising approximately one gram of eyesha dow when dried.
The slurry after being applied to the display card is allowed to dry. Altenatively, baking or forced heated air drying of the samples can be employed.
