Description
SPECIFICATION
Outside wall and roof glazing
The invention relates to outside wall and roof glazing comprising a carrier construction which is formed from extruded members, and double glazed panes which are fixed to the carrier construction.
According to the invention, there is provided outside wall and roof glazing comprising a carrier construction which is formed from extruded members, and double glazed panes which are fixed to the carrier construction, in which the double glazed panes are provided at their edge regions with outwardly open channel shaped members into which engage flanges of holders which are fixed to the carrier construction, the flanges being covered in an outward direction by a sealing material, associated with the flanges of the holders at the side which is towards the carrier construction are pieces of elastic material supported against the inside flanges of the channel shaped members, and a foil is provided at the bottom of the space for receiving the sealing material, the foil being supported against the flanges of a plurality of the holders and extending into the channel shaped members.
The elastic mounting of the double glazed panes will not be adversely affected by the sealing material by means of which the holders are covered relative to the exterior. The space for receiving the sealing material has a bottom or end portion which is formed by the foil. The foil is supported against the flanges of the row of holders and extends into the spaces within the channel shaped members. The spacing between the outside edge of a double glazed pane and the carrier construction provides a relatively large cavity which would have to be completely filled with the sealing material if the foil were not introduced in that cavity, in the manner of a separating or partitioning wall. The holders, which are arranged at a spacing from each other and which peripherally define an area or panel of the facade or front structure, form a support means for the foil.
The space to be filled with sealing material thus only extends between the mutually facing side edges of the outer panes of the double glazed panes and the web portions, which bearthereagainst, of the-channel shaped members. The space in which the holders are disposed remains completely free of sealing material. In that connection, it is particularly advantageous if the foil projects beyond the edges of the flanges of the holders, which edges are towards the end web portions of the channel shaped members, with the foil extending to the base webs or close adjacent thereto as that then ensures that the sealing material does not pass through the gaps.
In regard to outside wall and roof glazing structures, the individual double glazed panes are often not disposed in the same plane as for example when the structure provides outwardly projecting bay window-like constructions or the like, the configuration of which in- plan is for example trapezoidal.
Constructions of that kind may include holders which have two web portions which extend at an obtuse angle to each other each of which extends parallel to the plan of its respective double glazed pane.
The invention is diagrammatically illustrated by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a partly sectional view of part of outside wall glazing acording to one embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is an exploded view of a holder for securing the double glazed panes of the outside wall glazing of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a partly sectional view of another embodiment of outside wall glazing according to the invention in the form of a corner rafter construction.
Figure 1 shows one possibility of fixing two mutually aligned double glazed panes 1 to a carrier structure formed from extruded members 2. The double glazed panes 1 are produced in conventional manner from two spaced-apart glass panels 1' and 1". The glass panels 1' and 1" are connected in known fashion by means of a spacer frame 3 which is provided with a drying agent and which, as will be appreciated, is set back with respect to the outer edges of the double glazed pane 1. That arrangement thus forms a free space within each double glazed pane 1 and fitted into the free space formed in that way is a channel shaped member 4 which is open towards the outer edge of the double glazed pane. The channel shaped members 4 can form a complete peripheral frame although it is sufficient for individual portions to be disposed around each double glazed pane 1 in the edge region thereof. The intermediate space between the spacer frame 3 and the channel shaped member 4 is filled by a sealing material 5.
Adjacent edges of the double glazed panes are at a spacing from each other and are fixed to the extruded member 2 by means of a holder 6. One end of the holder 6 is provided with a hammer headshaped fixing member 7 which can be introduced into a T-shaped groove 8 provided on the shaped member 2 on the outside thereof, and which can then be fixed in position by being rotated through a quarter of a revolution. The oppositely disposed end of the holder 6 has a flange 9 which is disposed between the glass panels 1' and 1" and which also engages into the channel shaped members 4. The holder 6 is shown in greater detail in Figure 2. As will be apparent, the fixing member 7 is connected to the flange 9 by a spacer leg 10 which is provided with inclined tightening portions 11 at the end that is towards the fixing member 7.As Figure 2 also shows, the holder 6 is formed in the manner of a double-T-member, although a part of the portions which extend parallel to each other is formed of smaller dimensions. That part is the fixing member 7. In order to achieve a certain degree of elasticity, provided between the mutually facing sides of the flange 9 of the holder 6 and an inward side web portion 12 of the channel shaped member 4 is a piece 13 of an elastic material. The outside contour of the piece 13, in sheet form, is the same as that of the flange 9 and it is provided with an opening 14 therethrough, for it to be pushed onto the spacer leg 10.
As can be seen from Figure 1, provided in the region of each edge of the extruded member 2 is a further T-shaped groove 15 into which a glasscontacting seal 16 is fitted. The spacing between the mutually facing edges of the double glazed panes 1 provides a groove-like intermediate space which is filled with a sealing material 17. As the holders 6 are disposed at a spacing from each other, the sealing material would also fill up the space between the seals 16, which would be very uneconomical. The space between the channel shaped members 4 is therefore provided with a foil strip 18 which is fixed to the outside of the flanges 9 of the holders 6 and which also projects beyond the outer edges of the flanges 9 and which is to be considered as constituting a separating or partitioning wall, as its outer longitudinal edges extend to close to base webs 19 of the channel shaped members 4.It will also be seen from Figure 1 that the outer edges of the channel shaped members 4 are aligned with the outer edges of the double glazed panes 1. It will also be notedthatthe holder 6 is provided with a receiving bore 20 for a countersunk-head screw which can be screwed into a screwthreaded bore 21 in the shaped member 2.
Figure 3 shows a further embodiment in which two double glazed panes 1 are disposed at an obtuse angle to each other. The outside of the extruded member 2 is of an angular configuration corresponding thereto.
In order to maintain the spacing between the double glazed pane 1 and the outside of the extruded member 2, the arrangement also has two further glass-contacting seals 16'. In this embodiment, the holder 6 is screwed to the outer wall of the extruded member 2. The holder 6 is again provided with a flange 9 which however is of an angular configuration and which thus comprises two web portions 9' and 9". It will be appreciated that the region which is on the longitudinal centre line is of a flat configuration in that arrangement. Instead of the sheet 13, strips 13' of an elastic material are provided between the side web portion 12 of the channel shaped member 4 and the side, that is towards the extruded member 2, of the web portions 9' and 9" of the flange 9.In this embodiment also, provided between the channel shaped members 4 is a foil strip 18 which is secured to the flanges 9 of a plurality of holders 6.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figure 3, the mutually facing edges of the outer glass panels 1' of the double glazed panes 1 project relative to the outer edges of the channel shaped members 4 in order to reduce the width of the intermediate space, i.e. to bring it down to the spacing which is usual when using double glazed panes which are disposed in the same plane, so that the overall impression is not detrimentally affected. In addition, the amount of sealing material required is not needlessly increased. Further constructions can be envisaged, in each of which the holder 6 is substantially to be matched to the embodiment involved as the foil 18 can be shaped to any form without particular precautionary measures.
In contrast to the illustrated embodiments, the channel shaped members 4 and the spacer frame 3 may be produced in one piece by the production of a suitable shaped structure. In that case, the sealing material 5 can be eliminated, thereby further simplifying manufacture.
