Description
SPEGIFICATION
Flexible heating tapes
This invention relates to flexible heating tapes incorporating electrical resistance heating elements.
Such tapes are widely used, for instance, to protect pipes against frost or to otherwise maintain pipes at a predetermined minimum temperature. Such tapes usually comprises an extruded plastics body in which the elements are embedded but the plastics material gives only limited mechanical protection and no electrical (i.e. earth) protection.
In accordance with the invention, a flexible heating tape of the known form in comprising an extruded plastics body are given improved mechanical protection by an overwrapped covering of metallic foil wrapped spirally about the plastics body. Such a protective covering is easily applied, and in addition to improving mechanical protection, it provides electrical earth protection to the tape.
The foil may, for example, be of aluminium, copper, tin/copper or stainless steel. Typically its thickness may be in the order of 0.1 to 0.2 mm, and its width in the order of 10 to 20 mm.
Electrical conductivity of the covering may be enhanced if desired by the incorporation of wire or stranded wire conductor either under or over the foil covering. The wire may be supplied attached to the foil or it may be wrapped as a separate item over the plastics body or over the foil covering.
1. A flexible heating tape comprising electrical resistance heating elements embedded in an extruded plastics body, in a covering of metallic foil wrapped spirally around the plastics body to provide mechanical and electrical earth protection.
2. A tape according to claim 1, wherein the foil is of aluminium, copper, tin/copper or stainless steel.
3. A tape according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the foil thickness is 0.1 to 0.2 mm and its width is preferably 10 to 20 mm.
4. A tape according to claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein a wire conductor is also wrapped around the plastics body or over the foil, to provide additional earth protection.

Claims (4)
1. A flexible heating tape comprising electrical resistance heating elements embedded in an extruded plastics body, in a covering of metallic foil wrapped spirally around the plastics body to provide mechanical and electrical earth protection.
2. A tape according to claim 1, wherein the foil is of aluminium, copper, tin/copper or stainless steel.
3. A tape according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the foil thickness is 0.1 to 0.2 mm and its width is preferably 10 to 20 mm.
4. A tape according to claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein a wire conductor is also wrapped around the plastics body or over the foil, to provide additional earth protection.
