Description

SPECIFICATION Device for supporting an article on a ladder This invention relates to a device for supporting an article on a ladder.
According to the present invention there is provided a device for supporting an article on a ladder, comprising retaining means adapted to receive a side-piece of the ladder, a portion of the retaining means being adapted to receive a cross-piece of the ladder, and article support means, said article support means being joined to the retaining means.
Advantageously the article support means extends outwardly of the ladder.
Preferably, the article support means extends substantially parallel to a plane parallel to both the longitudinal axis of the side-piece and to the longitudinal axis of the cross-piece.
More preferably the article support means extends substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cross-piece.
It is desirable that the device comprises an integral length of rod or tubing which is configured such that it can pass at least partially around the side-piece and at least partially around the cross-piece. It is preferable that the rod or tubing is configured such that it can abut an inner surface, a front surface and an outer surface of the side-piece.
Desirably, the rod or tubing is configured such that is can abut a part of the surface of the cross-piece which faces in the opposite direction to the front surface of the side-piece.
Preferably the rod or tubing is configured such that it can pass substantially entirely around the cross-piece.
Conveniently a hook is provided at an end of the article support means remote from the retaining means.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an end elevation of a device according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a perspective view of a device according to the invention arranged upon a ladder, with part of the ladder broken away.
In Fig. 1 a device for supporting an article on a ladder is generally designated 1. The device 1 is formed from an integral length of rod 2 and comprises retaining means 3 and article support means 4. The retaining means 3 includes a portion 3a which is adapted to receive a cross-piece or rung 5 of a ladder 6 (see Fig. 2).
The ladder 6 includes two sidepieces or legs 7 and 8, of which the sidepiece 8 is shown partially broken away. The sidepiece 7 has an inner surface 9, a front surface 10 and an outer surface 11.
The rod 2 of the retaining means 3 is formed into a loop 1 2 which is adapted to receive the side-piece 7. The loop 1 2 can abut against the surfaces 9, 10 and 11 of the side-piece 7.
The portion 3a of the retaining means 3 includes two loops 1 3 and 14 which are joined together by a member 15, which runs at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the cross-piece 5. The loops 13 and 14 are both adapted to receive the cross-piece 5. The loop 1 3 is arrangedadjacent the side-piece 7, while the loop 14 is arranged remote from the side-piece 7.
The loop 1 3 includes a part 1 3a which can abut the uppermost part of the surface of the cross-piece 5, and the loop 14 includes a part 1 4a which can abut the lowermost part of the surface of the cross-piece. The loop 1 3 further includes a part 1 3b which can abut a part of the surface of the cross-piece 5 which faces in an opposite direction to the front surface 10 of the side-piece 7.
The loop 1 3 is joined to the loop 1 2 by a member 1 6 which runs substantially parallel to the inner surface 9. A top portion 1 6a of the member 1 6 forms part of the loop 1 3.
The article support means 4 includes a part 1 7 which extends transversely from part 1 2 of the retaining means 3, and which runs transversely to outer surface 11. The part 1 7 runs parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cross-piece 5.
At the end of part 1 7 remote from the ladder 6, a hook 1 8 is provided.
In use, the device 1 is fitted to the ladder 6 at any selected cross-piece 5. Any desired article such as a pot of paint or a bucket of water may then be attached to the hook 1 8.
The weight of the article causes a part 1 2a of the loop 1 2 to abut against the front surface 10 of the side-piece 7. Simultaneously, the part 1 3b of the loop 1 3 abuts against a part of the surface of the cross-piece 5 which faces in substantially the opposite direction to the front surface 10, thereby holding the device 1 to the ladder 6.
The part 1 4a of the ladder can abut against the lowermost surface of the cross-piece 5, so that the device 1 can not be knocked off the ladder 5 by upward pressure alone.
It should be noted that the device 1 need not necessarily include the loop 1 4 and the member 1 5. However the presence of the loop 1 4 and the member 1 5 increases the stability of the device.

A device for supporting an article on a ladder, comprising retaining means adapted to receive a side-piece of the ladder, a portion of the retaining means being adapted to receive a cross-piece of the ladder, and article support means, said article support means being attached to the retaining means.
