Abstract
The system comprises, besides an aeration zone and a clarification zone separated by a vertical wall (14), at least an intermediate filtering-flocculation zone limited by the vertical wall (14) and an oblique wall (12) under the clarification zone (11). Under this filtering-flocculation zone is a concentration zone (13) of the sludge limited by the vertical wall (14) and an oblique wall (10) of the basin of which the slope of 60` approximately is the same as that of the wall (12) and of about the same height. The width of the horizontal passages between the walls is such that the current of water and sludge which goes through them tends to be laminar. According to one alternative of execution the zone of concentration of the sludge does not communicate directly with the aeration zone, but through an outer conduit which brings the concentrated sludge into the aeration zone.
