Abstract

A building component is manufactured by mixing granules of laterite with a binder, pouring the mixture into a mould cavity and drying the mixture so that the granules of laterite are bound together by the binder. The binder may be polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl acetate.

Description

SPECIFICATION Building Component This invention relates to building components and, more particularly, to a method of manufacturing a building component and to a component manufactured in accordance with the method.
It is known to manufacture building blocks from cementitious compositions. However, in some countries it is difficult to obtain cementitious compositions at reasonable cost. In consequence, buildings which are comprised of cementitious blocks are expensive in such countries.
A mineral which is often found in such countries is laterite, which is an ignious rock weathered to a decomposed state and of friable ferruginous composition.
Therefore, it is desirable to provide building blocks from laterite instead of cementatious compositions in countries where such compositions are difficult to obtain but in which laterite is readily obtainable.
According to the present invention, there is provided a method of manufacturing a building component comprising the steps of: mixing granules of laterite with a binder pouring the mixture into a mould cavity, and drying the mixture so that the granules of laterite are bound together by the binder to define a component having a shape of the mould cavity.
The binder may be a polyvinyl alcohol or acetate.
The proportion of binder to laterite may be 2% to 3%.
The granules may be provided by crushing and sieving laterite.
The granules may be heated prior to mixing with the binder.
Also according to the present invention there is provided a building component manufactured according to the method.
Following is a description, by way of example only, of one method of carrying the invention into effect.
A supply of laterite is crushed and sieved to fine granules and is heated to 3000--4000F to extract moisture therefrom. The crushed and sieved laterite is mixed with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), the proportion of PVA to laterite being approximately 2%3%. The mixture, when dry, comprises an integral block having a shape of the mould cavity. The block is removed from the cavity and can be used in constructing a building.
A polyvinyl alcohol suitable for use in mixing with laterite is 'Febond'.
