Abstract

203,100. Rose, W., and Rose Bros. (Gainsborough), Ltd. June 23, 1922. Packing granular materials into cartons. - In apparatus for opening out and feeding collapsed cartons, a pile of collapsed cartons is supported in a magazine 1, Fig. 1, by bars 4 and the lowermost is pushed by a feeder 5 through a slot 12 on to a table 13. The table falls to the position indicated in broken lines, a finger 25 following the motion to retain the carton on the table. A bending finger 28, Figs. 1 and 4, bears upon an end-flap 3<a> at the end of the carton and depresses also the side flap 3<b>, the parts 3<c>, 3<d> remaining horizontal. A blade 41 enters the carton between the parts 3<b>, 3<d>, the fingers 25, 28 withdrawing. A side flap 51 rotates on an axis 52 and erects the carton into the position shown in Fig. 5. The flap 51, which is actuated by a rack 56, Fig. 3, and pinion 55, may rotate through more than a right angle and a pin 61 engages the hooked end 67 of a link 66 connected to the depending end 65<a> of the side flap 51<a>, causing this flap to move in parallelism with the flap 51 after the position shown in Fig. 5 has been attained. The flaps return to a vertical position, the blade 41 retires, and the table 13 rises again to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, carrying the expanded carton between guides 71, 71<a>. A plunger 73 pushes the expanded carton from this position on to a former 74, or on to a table, conveyer belt, &c.
