Abstract

A hand-held tool serves to break an optical fiber 133 cleanly at a predetermined point and is easy and reliable to use. The fiber projects from one half 13' of a connector, which connector half is engaged with a coupling 23 of the tool. The fiber is clamped by the tool at 38 and tensioned by movement of the clamp away from the coupling 23, thus bending the fiber across a curved support surface 35. Finally the fiber is transversely scored by a blade edge 81 which moves in a curved path in approaching the fiber. A heater may be provided to burn off a plastics coating of the fiber prior to scoring. <IMAGE>
