Abstract

A gravity separator for the separation of oil from water comprises an upright vessel (2) having an inlet (7) for an oil and water mixture on one side, an overflow (31) by which floating oil passes to an outlet (41), a water outlet arranged below the overflow (31), and upright baffles (26, 27, 28, 29) between the inlet and the outlets and so staggered that the oil and water must flow along a zig-zag path in a substantially horizontal direction, from the inlet to the outlets, and the average length of the path is at least three times the average horizontal straight line distance between the inlet and the outlets. Inlet 7 is connected to a vertical distributor 9 with apertures whose size is alterable by a movable collar. A trap 30 retains particulate solids. Coalescing means may be mounted between two adjacent baffles, and the baffles may be curved. The oil and water levels and the operation of the separator may be automatically controlled by sensors and electrical or pneumatic controllers. <IMAGE>
