Abstract

A lifting apparatus comprises a platform (6) guided on an upright (2) and movable by a ram (7) acting on a cable and pulley system comprising pulleys (8, 8A, 9, 9A), and cables (11, 13) which are anchored at one end to a fixed mounting (12) and are connected at their other ends to the platform. In order to improve the lift of the platform, the cable and pulley system is arranged to provide a ratio of platform/ram movement of greater than 1:1, and preferably 2:1. The ram is a retraction ram to provide quicker operation than with an expansion ram. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), a single cable (17) replaces the two cables (11, 13) and the fixed anchorages are replaced by a further pulley (16). <IMAGE>
