Abstract

Ink is contained in a reservoir (27) which is formed by an ink drum (4), which turns clockwise during operation, and a doctor blade assembly (20, 24, 25). The gap between the ink drum and the doctor blade (25) controls the ink film thickness on the ink drum and is adjusted by means including a step- down mechanism. The doctor blades may be each only 5 mm to 10 mm wide, and contiguous with one another to form a full-width blade edge. The edges of the individual blades can be moved towards or away from the ink drum by a rocking of the blades, permitted by flexing of a thin tongue of each blade or blade support, by which the blade is mounted. The rocking is controlled by an adjusting screw (18) and step-down is achieved either, as shown, by a lever arrangement, or by two screw threads of different pitch. Separators (15, 16, 17) can be mounted to divide the ink reservoir (27) into portions extending along different parts of the length of the ink drum (4). Alternatively, diluent or pigment may be added zone-wise to produce a zone-wise distribution of ink. <IMAGE>
