Abstract
The invention relates to a digital timing apparatus for measuring the phase relationship between a plurality of cyclically occuring events in, for example, an internal combustion engine. The apparatus has first means (74) for receiving and digitizing (eg forming a two state signal from) a cyclic continually oscillating reference signal having positive, negative and zero- crossover portions and for receiving and digitizing a plurality of timing signals, corresponding to the cylically occuring events, each timing signal having positive, negative and zero- crossover portions and second means (84) for displaying the phase relationship between a pair of the timing signals in terms of reference signal digits (eg number of high level states ocurring between them), in decimal format. A third means (86), is provided for measuring the period of the digitized reference signal as a proportion of the total cycle, and fourth means (88), coupled to the first, second and third means, automatically controls operation of the second and third means and causes the displayed phase relationship between the pair of timing signals and the period of the digitized reference signal to be compounded to provide a measure of the time between the pair of timing signals in terms of degrees of the total cycle. <IMAGE>
