Abstract

The invention relates to apparatus for and a method of dynamically timing an apparatus such as an internal combustion engine which method includes cyclically generating reference pulses (K), and at least first and second timing pulses (L, M) the time between which is to be measured. The number of pulses of the reference signal in a generating cycle is counted and the time between a leading edge (N) of the first timing pulse (L) and a leading edge (P) of the preceding reference pulse (Q), measured. This time is divided by the period of the reference pulse to produce a first timing fraction. The time between a leading edge (R) of the second timing pulse (M) and a leading edge (S) of the preceding reference pulse (T) is measured and this time divided by the period of the reference pulse to produce a second timing fraction. The number of whole reference pulses (K) between the leading edges (N, R respectively) of the first and second timing pulses is counted, the first timing fraction subtracted from the count and the second timing fraction added to the count thereby producing a timing measurement between the first and second timing pulses (L, M) in terms of reference signal pulses (K). <IMAGE>
