Abstract

An apparatus for producing microorganisms, such as yeast, comprises a vertical column 1 having means 4 for feeding the culture medium and inoculative biomass and divided into sections 3 by perforated partitions 2, the intermediate sections accommodating floating packing pieces 14 while the lowermost section 3 contains an aerator device 5, and the uppermost section includes means for concentrating the suspension of microorganisms in the form of a horizontal chamber 7 which converges towards a discharge nozzle 8 for the concentrated suspension and accommodates a partition 10 arranged to restrict the passage area through the chamber and to form with the walls of the chamber 7, a vessel 9 for collecting clarified culture liquid. <IMAGE>
