Abstract

In the manufacture of hollow glazing panels 6 in which vitreous sheets 1, 2 are assembled spaced apart by one or more intervening marginal spacer strips 3 of plastically deformable material, joints at the ends of the spacer strip or strips 3 are formed by applying the strip or strips around the margins of the first sheet 1 so that each end of the strip material lies at a corner of the sheet, applying the second sheet 2 to the first with the spacer strip or strips 3 intervening between and adherent to them, holding the thus formed assembly in position and applying forces to the spacer material at at least one corner of the assembly to squeeze its ends together. Apparatus for performing the method comprises a support and locating means (not shown) defining the position shown for a corner of the assembly 6, means such as the clamp 11, 12 for holding the assembly in that position, and means such as a re-entrant pressure finishing tool 35 and/or at least one squeezing tool 27 for applying the forces to the ends of the spacer material. The spacer 3 preferably comprises a tacky curable polymeric spacing element 4 and a cured desiccant-containing supporting element 5. <IMAGE>
