Abstract

A rod (16) pivotally attaches to the side of a boat (14), extends outwardly therefrom, and connects with the free end of an oar (21) together with a restraint to provide a fulcrum remote from the side of the boat as the oar is pulled from fore to aft positions through a stroke. The restraining means, such as a forward link (19) extending outwardly from the side of the boat and a control link (18) connecting the outer ends of the rod (16) and forward link (19), allows aft movement of the fulcrum during the stroke. The position of the fulcrum together with its aft movement reduce the component of the force normal to the blade (32) that acts normally to the direction of motion thereby increasing the propulsive efficiency. Alternate restraining means, such as a gear and pinion or pulley arrangement or the like can be used to control aft movement of the fulcrum. <IMAGE>
