Abstract

Apparatus for making a finned tube by wrapping a strip of finning material 118 round tubing T includes at least two tube feed units 18, 20, each reciprocated between a tube- gripping position and a tube-release position, the movements of the feed units being synchronised so that the tube is moved continuously, (drives 32, 36), and the tube is also continuously rotated by the feed units (drives 30, 34) to wrap the finning material on it. The grippers are advanced by rotating sprockets 44 engaging chains 50, and returned by hydraulic cylinders 58 driving chains 50 through chains 56 and free-wheel devices 62. Continuous tubing may be made up of lengths of tube rotated at the same speed as the tube being finned, and butt welded to the latter. <IMAGE>
