Abstract
The invention relates to materials containing zirconium, silicon and oxygen, and precursors for such materials. There is disclosed, inter alia, a process for the preparation of a material containing zirconium, silicon and oxygen comprising heating a gel precursor for the material to convert it to the material, said precursor being a gel containing silica and zirconia or a precursor for zirconia. The gel precursor may be prepared by gelling a colloidal dispersion. Pigments may be formed by inclusion of pigmentation agents e.g. Pr(III), fluxes such as NaF or NaCl, metal powder and/or metal oxides, e.g. TiO2.
