Abstract
A hollow-fibre permeability apparatus 10 in which a permeating region of a housing 1 contains a bundle 6 of hollow fibres 5, and materials selectively permeate through the membranes formed by the permeable walls of the hollow fibres 5, between a first fluid 36 flowing along the exteriors of the hollow fibres 5 and a second fluid 35 flowing along the interiors of the hollow fibres 5. The apparatus 10 comprises means for fixing both end portions of the hollow fibres 5 fluid-tightly to the housing 1, the walls of the housing 1 extending substantially parallel with the hollow-fibres 5 between the end portions of the hollow fibres 5, and separate inlets and outlets 14, 15, 17 and 18 for introducing and discharging the first and second fluids 36 and 35. At least one partition wall 12 defined inside the housing 1 extends substantially parallel to the hollow fibres 5 such that the permeating region is partitioned into a plurality of permeating compartments 23a, 23b and 23c which are uniformly filled with the hollow fibres 5 and open into each other to form common spaces at inlet and outlet regions adjacent to the inlet and outlet 14 and 15 for the first fluid 36, whereby the first fluid 36 from the inlet 14 can flow substantially in one direction towards the outlet region through the permeating compartments 23a, 23b and 23c after being distributed to the permeating compartments 23a, 23b and 23c. The partitions may have apertures. <IMAGE>
