Abstract
1512881 Hollow fibre permeability apparatus NIPPON ZEON CO Ltd 23 Jan 1976 [1 Feb 1975 15 Feb 1975 10 March 1975 20 June 1975 29 Oct 1975 (2) 20 Dec 1975] 02691/76 Heading B1X A hollow-fibre permeability apparatus comprises a housing having a permeating region; a bundle of permeable-wall hollow fibres disposed at least in said permeating region of said housing; at least one inlet tube for supplying a first fluid into said housing so as to pass into the spaces between said fibres; at least one outlet tube for withdrawing said first fluid from said housing; at least one portion of said housing in said permeating region being of enlarged cross-section relative to said bundle to define a space between said bundle and a wall of said housing into which at least part of said first fluid can pass in its passage from said inlet to said outlet tube, the shape of said enlarged cross-section portion promoting cross-flow of said first fluid relative to said fibres; and means for passing a second fluid through said fibres such that materials selectively permeate through the walls of said fibres. In one embodiment there are six enlarged portions 52, 53, 54, 66, 67, 68; as applied to haemodialysis, blood flows through the fibres 5 which may be of cellulose, and dialysate flows around and across the fibres from entry 27 to exit 28. Connections 26 and 29 allow for partial recirculation of dialysate. Alternatively the dialysate may be recycled in toto, passing through an adsorbent to purify it. The apparatus is also applicable to desalting of water by reverse osmosis, concentration of juices, oxygenation of blood or removal of yeast from beer.
