Abstract
In a telecommunication cable comprising a core 1 including a multiplicity of polyethylene insulated conductors 2 with petroleum jelly 3 filling the interstices between the conductors, and, a polyethylene sheath 7, risk that a space between the core and sheath will provide a path for water that has entered the cable through a defective sheath is reduced by positioning between the core and sheath a flexible envelope 4 of polyethylene or polyethylene terephthalate containing a buffer material 5, or two or more such envelopes arranged side by side and/or end to end. The buffer material flows or is deformed within the envelope when the sheath is applied or it expands after the sheath is applied or, being hygroscopic e.g. polyacrylamide, when water penetrates the envelope. 6 is an optional polyethylene coated aluminium moisture barrier. The buffer material may be air, petroleum jelly, free- flowing particles or foam. <IMAGE>
