Abstract

The invention relates to optical fibre connectors and provides a mechanism for accurately aligning fibres to close lateral and angular tolerances. The connector (10) has a through-bore (14) with a convergent region (15). The fibre assembly (16) is aligned within the connector (10) by means of spacer spheres (17) which space the fibre assembly (16) concentrically within the convergent region (15). An insert sleeve (18) retained in the connector (10) by means of a screw end cap (13) serves to urge the spacer spheres (17) into contact with the inner peripheral surface of the convergent region (15) and hence gripping relationship with the fibre assembly (16). A modified connector substitutes one of the electronic devices for one of the fibres. <IMAGE>
