Abstract

An apparatus for forming a coherent and substantially uniform sheet of dry fibrous material, for example wood pulp, comprises a feed conveyor 1 arranged to receive and convey the fibrous material, a spreader 3, a collection conveyor, which in the embodiment illustrated is also the conveyor 1, positioned to receive and convey fibrous material discharged by the spreader and means, such as rolls 5, 6 and 62, 12, for consolidating the fibrous material received by the collection conveyor. The spreader 3 has a first member 26 which comprises an assembly of blades 34 extending across the feed conveyor 1 and rotatable so that the blades 34 at their lowest position 24 are closely adjacent to the feed conveyor and rotate towards the fibrous material on the feed conveyor to lift the fibrous material off the feed conveyor. The spreader 3 also has a second member, which in the embodiment illustrated is a deflector plate 37, positioned so that the fibrous material lifted off the feed conveyor 1 by the first member 26 is subjected to a fibre-separating action between the first and second members before being discharged from the spreader 3. <IMAGE>
