A cast steel bar B is progressively straightened as it is guided, and possibly withdrawn, by rolls 19, from a wheel-and-band casting machine 10, 11 which forms a cooled arcuate mould M. There may be side guide rolls. The bar B may be directly hot rolled. <IMAGE>
