Abstract
A continuously cast steel bar emerges from a rotating wheel-and- band casting machine 10, 11 at above 1100 DEG C and at a speed more than 600 cm/min., and has a carbon content of 0.08 to 0.80% and a surface finish better than 10 mu /cm with defects not more than 2.5 mm deep on average. In a secondary cooling section 18, support rolls 19 may be driven to carry away the cast bar C, assisted by pinch rolls 36 if necessary. Upper rolls 26 retain the bar in the path P on the way to a rolling mill. <IMAGE>
