Abstract

A method of and system for vibrating a body in a selected mode wherein the actual vibratory motion of the body is monitored and compared with the vibratory force applied thereto, automatic adjustments being made to the manner of application of the vibratory force in order to maintain the selected mode, and wherein the vibratory mode may be selected at or close to a resonant mode of vibration or alternatively to maintain a constant amplitude of vibration, the mode being monitored by reference to the phase-relationship between the applied force and the actual oscillatory motion of the body measured by a transducer 17, and employing a variable frequency controller to achieve and maintain the selected mode. As shown the vibration is applied by electromagnetic means 14 to the walls of a discharge member 11 of a hopper 10 but in an alternative embodiment a conical baffle within a rigid discharge member is vibrated. <IMAGE>
