Abstract

A receiver for pulse-shaped RF signals is disclosed in which the received signals, whose amplitudes may vary from pulse to pulse within a wide dynamic range (e.g. up to about 100 dB), are amplified so that their video output level variations are limited to a predetermined range (e.g. 10 dB) so that only undistorted signals are passed on for further evaluation. To accomplish this, a cascade consisting of a plurality of amplifiers 211-214 in series each having output signal tap is controlled by a logic circuit which selects one of the output taps for connection to a subsequent processing stage 10, through FET switches 281-284. The receiver is especially suitable for use in precision DME transponders. <IMAGE>
