Abstract

In the manufacture of cellulose ethers the amount of caustic alkali exceeds the amount of cellulosic material taken, and the quantity of water ties between <FORM:0200815/2/1> and <FORM:0200815/2/2> , in these expressions a being the amount of caustic alkali employed to each part of cellulose taken. The initial material may be cellulose, or a conversion product or derivative in which the cellulose has not been degraded too far, or an ether of a lower stage of etherification. The etherification may be carried out in one or several stages, and in the presence of diluents such as benzol, and with the aid of catalysts such as copper, copper salts, ferrous sulphate or other iron salt. If a water-resistant ether is desired, the quantity of alkali should be 1.5 to 2.5 times the amount of cellulosic material taken. Specifications 163,017 and 163,018 are referred to.
