Abstract
A soldering iron has a thermal sensor of small transverse dimensions in the interior of a spigot 3 of the bit 4. The sensor comprises a tube 10 and a rod 11 of materials having different coefficients of thermal expansion, the rod 11 being connected at one end to a switch 6 and at the other to the tube 10 which is secured to the iron housing 1 such that the different expansions result in the switch 6 being switched on and off when the temperature of the bit falls below or exceeds a selected temperature. The tube 10 is preferably of stainless steel. <IMAGE>
