Abstract

A method is described of processing an exposed silver halide photographic material by treating it with an image dye modifying/silver halide developing (dymodev) compound. The dymodev compound develops the silver halide latent image and becomes inactive but diffuses from the non-image areas to an associated image dye layer where it reduces the image dye to form a photographic dye image in the image dye layer. The use of the dymodev compound reduces the amount of silver required to form a photographic image. Examples of dymodev compounds are di-hydro derivatives of pyrazines and quinoxalines and certain metal ions such as chromous.
