Abstract

In the separation of gases by selective membrane diffusion or permeation by means of plural stages 12, 13 and 17, 18 of compression followed by separation using a membrane permeable to a desired gas or gases, product purity is increased without increasing the work required by directing the unpermeated mixture 20 from a second or later stage 18 of separation without compression to a further stage 21 of membrane separation to provide a recycle permeate 22 enriched in the desired gas or gases and blending this permeate with the gaseous feed to the second or later stage of separation before compression thereof. The separation stage 21 is suitably such that the unpermeated mixture 23 produced therefrom has approximately the same composition as the gas mixture entering the separation stage 13 upstream of the said second or later stage 18 allowing recycle to that stage. <IMAGE>
