Abstract
1,166,518. Separating oxygen and nitrogen. BERGWERKSVERBAND G.m.b H 29 Nov., 1967 [8 Dec., 1966], No. 54381 /67. Heading B1L. Mixtures of oxygen and nitrogen, suitably. air, are separated into fractions enriched in oxygen and nitrogen by fractionally and preferentially adsorbing the mixture on oxidised or unoxidised natural coal at 2-40 atmos. pressure, desorbing a first nitrogen-enriched fraction at 5-100, preferably 10-30, mm. Hg until the composition of the desorbate has approximately the same composition as the original mixture and then collecting a second oxygen-enriched fraction under the same desorbing conditions. The adsorption and desorption steps are both suitably carried out at 50‹ to -60‹C., preferably 0-25‹C. The adsorbent coal is suitably used in a particle size of 0.1-0.5 mm., and is preferably a coal which has been oxidised at 150-200‹C.
