Abstract

Oil floating on open water is collected by one or more floating pick-up members (9) which are attached to a vessel (1) by oil conveying tubular shafts (15) pivoted about horizontal axes (25) so that members (9) ride lightly on the surface closely responding to wave motion or swell. Pump (26) on vessel (1) or on shore withdraws the oil, which may be directed towards members (9) by booms extending ahead of the vessel. Members (9) may be loosely mounted on the tubular shafts so as to permit of tilt to better conform to wave motion. Figs. 7, 8 illustrate alternative pick- up members. Weights can be moved along shafts (15) to adjust buoyancy. <IMAGE>
