Abstract

A combination of a pipe member having a belled end, and a resilient annular sealing ring 4 for sealing a joint between said pipe member and a second pipe member, the radially outer peripheral surface 5 of the ring and an internal surface 3 of the belled end being complementarily shaped to prevent axial movement of the ring within the belled end, and the ring having a radial thickness and a non-circular cross-section such that when a said second pipe member is inserted into the belled end of said first pipe member having the ring located therewithin, the ring is compressed and the resultant contact surface area between the ring and the belled end is greater than the contact surface area between the ring and the non-belled end of the said second pipe member. The invention also comprises a sealing ring adapted for use in such a combination. <IMAGE>
