Abstract

209,910. Booth, L. B., and Lee, H. J. Dec. 1, 1922. Variable-speed friction gearing comprises a flywheel 3 engaged by a roller 5 which is slidable on its shaft 10 under the control of a spring 14, the shaft being carried in a pivoted bearing 11 so that the pull of the chain 7 which transmits the power to the driven member forces the roller against the fly-wheel. The roller is moved along its shaft to vary the speed by means of Bowden mechanism 17 and a lever 15. The free end of the roller shaft is carried by a sliding bearing 19 pressed in one direction by an adjustable spring 6 and released by Bowden mechanism 22 acting on a lever 21. The friction surface of the roller is formed by a ring 8 of L section bolted to the roller. The gearing is enclosed in a casing 13.
