Abstract
An improved self drying aluminium-containing composition in which drying is initiated by an alkaline substance is obtained by substituting an alkali metal nitrite for the alkali metal nitrate conventionally added to such a composition. The composition is particularly suitable as a mouldable padding material used to help feed molten metal to those parts of a casting which are remote from a riser. The composition is rammed into a cavity in a sand mould (2) for producing a casting (1) and dries and hardens to form a pad (6) which insulates molten metal poured into the mould.
