Abstract

207,886. Bedell, E. M. Sept. 7, 1922. Magnetic, electrostatic, and like separators.- Clover seed is freed from dodder by adding to the mixed seed a powdered magnetic or electrically conductive material which will adhere to one kind of seed only, and then treating the material in a magnetic or electric separator. Magnetic iron oxide, or aluminium may be employed. The separation may be performed by passing the seed on an endless band over a magnetic pulley or beneath a magnet, or beneath an electrically-charged laterally-moving member, such as a disc of vulcanite or a belt of silk. The electric charge is maintained by friction, and the coating of conductive material modifies the rebound of the seeds attracted to the charged surface. Calcium hydrate or barium sulphate may be added to the magnetic oxide.
